A gospel harmony is an attempt
to compile the the 4 gospels into a single account. This may take
the form either of a single, or merged narrative.
Harmonies are constructed for a variety of purposes: to provide a
straightforward devotional text, for a readable and accessible piece of
literature and or to better understand how the accounts relate to each
other.
Jesus Teaches and Heals at Capernaum
Matthew 8:14-17, Mark 1:21-34, Luke 4:33-41
She was healed, got up and served him. Freely you received, freely give.
[A]They went into Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus
went straight to the synagogue and taught. [B]And they were astonished
at His doctrine, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as
the scribes.
[C]Now in their synagogue there was
a man who was possessed by an unclean spirit -- a demon, and he cried
out with a loud voice, [D]saying, “Let us alone; what do you want with
us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are
-- the Holy One of God.”
[E]But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him.”
And the demon, the unclean spirit,
convulsed him, throwing him down among the people. Then he cried out
with a loud voice and came out of him, hurting him no more.
[F]And they were all so amazed that
they began asking each other, “What is this, a new doctrine?” Some
said, “What a message! For with authority and power He commands even
the unclean spirits, and they obey Him and come out.” [G]Immediately
His fame spread throughout all the country around Galilee.
[H]Now Jesus arose and left the
synagogue with Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John. They went straight
to Simon and Andrew’s house, where Jesus saw Simon’s wife’s mother
lying down, sick with a high fever. They told Jesus about her condition
and urged Him to help her. [I]So He came and stood over her. He took
her by the hand, lifted her up, and rebuked the fever. It immediately
left her, and she got up and ministered to them.
[J]Now when evening had come and
the sun was setting, the whole city gathered at the door. All who had
anyone sick with various diseases brought them to Him, and there were
many. He laid His hands on everyone of them and healed them all. Some
were possessed with demons, and He cast out the spirits with His word.
The devils came out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the
Christ, the Son of God.” Rebuking them He forbid them to speak, because
they knew Him, that He was Christ.
[K]All this fulfilled what was
spoken by Isaiah the prophet: “He Himself took our infirmities, and
bare our sicknesses.”[1]
Jesus Teaches throughout Galilee
Matthew 4:23-25, Mark 1:35-39, Luke 4:42-44
[A]In the morning, long before the day began, Jesus got up and went out to a solitary place, where He prayed.
[B]Now Simon and his companions
went to look for Him, [C]and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone
is looking for you.”
[D]”Let’s go to the next towns,” He
said to them, “so I can preach there also, for this is why I came.”
[E]The people were looking for Him,
and when they found Him, they tried to keep Him from leaving. [F]But He
said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also,
for this is why I was sent.”
[G]So Jesus traveled throughout all
Galilee, preaching and teaching the gospel in their synagogues. He
preached about the kingdom, cast out demons, and healed all kinds of
sickness and disease among the people. [H]And His fame spread
throughout all Syria. The people brought to Him all who were sick with
different diseases and pains, those who were possessed with demons,
those who were insane, those who were paralyzed, and He healed them.
[I]And great multitudes of people followed Him, from Galilee, from
Decapolis, from Jerusalem, from Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
Jesus Heals a Leper
Matthew 8:2-4, Mark 1:40-45, Luke 5:12-16
HE IS willing.
[A]And it came to pass as He was in a certain city, suddenly, a man who
was full of leprosy saw Jesus. The leper came and quickly knelt before
Jesus with his face toward to ground, worshiping Him, and pleading,
“Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”
[B]And Jesus, moved with
compassion, reached out His hand and touched him, saying to him, “I’m
willing; be cleansed.” As soon as He said this, the leprosy immediately
left him, and he was cleansed.
[C]Then Jesus sent him away,
strictly warning him not to speak of this. “Say nothing to anyone,”
Jesus said. “But go your way and show yourself to the priest, and offer
the gift that Moses commanded for a leper who is cleansed. This will be
a testimony to them.”
[D]But he went out and began to
tell everyone about the matter, which caused the fame of Jesus to
spread abroad like a blaze. It spread so much that Jesus could no
longer openly enter a city, but had to stay out in the deserted places,
where great multitudes from everywhere came together to hear Him, and
to be healed by Him of their infirmities.
[E]And He withdrew into the wilderness, and prayed.
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
Matthew 9:1-8, Mark 2:1-12, Luke 5:17-26
He saw their faith and said your sins are forgiven.
[A]After some days, He entered a boat and crossed over and came to His
own city, Capernaum. When it was shouted that He was in the house,
[B]many quickly gathered together. So many that there was no room to
receive them, not even around the door. And He preached the word to
them.
[C]And it came to pass on a certain
day, as He was teaching, there were some Pharisees and doctors of the
law sitting by. They had come with the crowd out of every town of
Galilee, and Judea, and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was
present to heal them. [D]And look! Four men came carrying a paralyzed
man, lying on a bed. They tried to find a way to bring the sick man in,
to lay him before Jesus, [E]but they couldn’t because of the crowd. So
they went up on the roof and uncovered it where Jesus was below. When
they had broken it up, they lowered the man on his stretcher through
the tiles into the crowd, right before Jesus.
[F]When Jesus saw their faith, He
said to the paralyzed man, “Young man. Cheer up; your sins are
forgiven.”
[G]At this, certain scribes and
Pharisees who were sitting there began to reason in their heart, saying
to themselves, “Who does this man think he is? Why, He’s blaspheming
against God! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
[H]Jesus immediately perceived in
His spirit their thoughts, and said to them, “Why do you think such
evil thoughts in your hearts? [I]Which is easier to say to the
paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Arise, pick up your
bed and walk’? [J]But that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority on earth to forgive sins...” (then He said to the paralytic),
“I tell you, arise and pick up your bedding and go your way to your
house.”
[K]He immediately got up, took what
he had been lying on and started home, glorifying God. He went before
all of them, and they were all amazed and also glorified God, saying,
“We have never seen anything like this!” They were filled with fear,
including the Pharisees. “We have seen strange things today,” they
said. [L]But when the multitudes saw what had happened, they marvelled
that God had given such power to men, and they praised Him.
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
Matthew 12:1-21, Mark 2:23-28; 3:1-12, Luke 6:1-11
Withered hand - heal anytime, even the Sabbath.
[A]And it came to pass on the second Sabbath after the first,
Jesus and His disciples went through the grainfields. His disciples
were hungry, and as they walked along they began to pick and eat the
heads of grain after rubbing the husk off in their hands. [B]But when
some of the Pharisees saw this, they said to Jesus, “Look, your
disciples are breaking the law of the Sabbath! Why are they doing
this?”
[C]So Jesus answered them, saying,
“Haven’t you ever read even this, what David did when he and those with
him were hungry and in need of food? [D]How he went into the house of
God when Abiathar was the high priest and ate the showbread that only
priests were allowed to eat and then gave some to his men? [E]Or
haven’t you read in the law how every Sabbath the priests actually
break the law when they enter the temple and work, yet they are not
guilty? [F]But I tell you, right here is one greater than the temple.
[G]And if you had known what this means, ‘I will have mercy and not
sacrifice,’[1] you would not have condemned the guiltless.”
[H]Then He said to them, “The
Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of
Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
[I]Jesus left that place, but on
another Sabbath He went again into their synagogue and taught; and
look, a man was there whose right hand was withered. The scribes and
the Pharisees were also there, watching Him to see if He would heal on
the Sabbath, so they might accuse Him. “Is it lawful to heal on the
Sabbath days?” they asked.
[J]But He knew what they had in
mind and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Get up and stand
here before the people.” And he got up and stood there.
[K]Then Jesus said to them, “If you
had one sheep to fall into a pit on the Sabbath, is there a man among
you who would not work to lift it out that day? [L]Isn’t a man much
better than a sheep? Therefore, I will ask you one thing. Is it lawful
on the Sabbath to do good or evil, to save life or kill it?” But they
kept silent.
[M]Jesus was grieved because of the
hardness of their hearts. He looked around at them all with anger and
said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” He stretched it out, and his
hand was completely restored, just like the other. [N]And the Pharisees
were filled with madness and discussed with one another what they would
do to Jesus. They went out and went straight to the Herodians, speaking
against Him and holding a council with them on how they might destroy
Him.
[O]When Jesus knew that they were
planning to kill Him, He left that place and withdrew to the sea with
His disciples. And great multitudes followed Him. They came from
Galilee, Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and from beyond the Jordan. A great
crowd also came from the region of Tyre and Sidon. They had heard what
great things He did; and they came to Him, and He healed them all.
[P]Because of the crowd, He told
His disciples to have a small boat waiting for Him, to keep the people
from crowding Him. [Q]For He had healed many, so many that they who had
afflictions kept pushing their way to Him so they could just touch Him.
[R]And whenever unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall before Him,
crying out, “You are the Son of God.” [S]But Jesus strictly warned them
not to make Him known. [T]All these things were to fulfill what Isaiah
the prophet said:
[U]Behold, my servant whom I have
chosen, my beloved in whom my soul
is well pleased. I will put my
Spirit upon Him, and He shall show
judgment to the Gentiles.
[V]He will not quarrel nor cry
out, nor will anyone hear His voice
in the streets.
[W]He will not break a bruised
reed, or quench a smoldering wick.
But He will lead justice to victory,
[X]and in His name the Gentiles will
trust.[2]
Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant
Matthew 8:1,5-13, Luke 7:1-10
We are worthy by his grace.
[A]Now when He had finished telling the people all these things, He
came down from the mountain, and great multitudes followed Him. He
entered Capernaum, [B]and there was a certain centurion who had a
servant who was very dear to him. The servant was sick and about to
die, [C]and when the centurion heard of Jesus, he sent the Jewish
elders to Jesus, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant.
[D]When they came to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying, “This
man is worthy of your help, [E]for he loves our nation and has built us
a synagogue.”
[F]Then Jesus went with them; and
when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him,
pleading, “Lord, my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible
pain.”
And Jesus said to his friends, “I
will come and heal him.” But his friends, still speaking for the
centurion, said, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to
have you come under my roof. Neither do I think myself worthy to come
to you in person. Just say the word and my servant will be healed.
[G]For I am also a man placed under authority, having soldiers under
me. I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and
he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
[H]When Jesus heard these things,
He marveled at him. And He turned and said to the people who followed
Him, “Truly, I tell you, I have not found anyone with such a great
faith, not even in Israel. [I]And I say to you, many will come from the
east and west and sit down with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom
of heaven. [J]But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer
darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
[K]Then Jesus said to the
centurion, “Go your way. Let it be done for you just as you have
believed.” And his servant was healed that very hour. [L]And when those
who were sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.
Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son
Luke 7:11-17
Luke 7:11-17
[11]The day after this, Jesus and
many of His disciples went to a city called Nain. And a large crowd
also went.
[12]Now when He came near the gate of the city, look, a dead man was
being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And
many people from the city were with her.
[13]When the Lord saw her, He had
compassion for her and said to her, “Don’t cry.” [14]Then He went and
touched the coffin, and the bearers of it stood still. And He said,
“Young man, I say to you, arise.”
[15]And he who was dead sat up and
began to speak. And Jesus delivered him to his mother. [16]Then fear
came upon them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet
has risen up among us,” and, “God has visited His people.”
[17]Then this report concerning Him spread throughout all Judea and the surrounding region.
The Demons Enter the Swine
Matthew 8:28-34, Mark 5:1-20, Luke 8:26-39
[A]When they arrived on the other side in the country of
Gadarenes, also called Gergesenes, which is across the sea from
Galilee, He was met by two who were demon-possessed, coming out of the
tombs. They were exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that
way.
[B]This happened as soon as Jesus
had left the boat and stepped on the shore. One was from the city but
lived among the tombs instead of a house. The man wore no clothes and
had an unclean spirit. He had been possessed by demons for a long time
and no one could bind him, not even with chains. [C]For he had often
been bound with shackles and chains, but he would pull the chains apart
and break the shackles to pieces; neither could anyone tame him.
[D]Night and day he was always in the mountains and tombs, crying out
and cutting himself with stones. [E]But when he saw Jesus from a
distance, he ran and worshiped Him.
[F]So, when he saw Jesus, he cried
out and fell down before Him. And look, they cried out with a loud
voice, saying, “What have we to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most
High God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” And he
pleaded with Him, saying, “I implore you by God, do not torment me.”
[G](He said this because Jesus had
commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often
seized him, so he was kept bound with chains and shackles, which he
would break. Then he would be driven by the devil into the wilderness.)
[H]Jesus asked him, “What is you
name?” And he said, “My name is Legion -- for we are many.” He said
this because many devils had entered into him. [I]And they begged Him
not to send them out of the country and command them to go into the
deep.
[J]Now a good ways off there was a
large herd of swine, feeding on the side of the mountains. [K]And all
the demons begged Him, saying, “If you cast us out, sent us among the
swine so that we may enter into them.” And Jesus gave them permission,
[L]saying to them: “Go.”
So the unclean spirits came out of
the man, and with Jesus’ permission, they went into the swine. And
look, the whole herd, about two thousand, ran violently down a steep
place into the sea and perished, choking in the water.
[M]When those who tended the swine
saw what had happened, they fled into the city and countryside, telling
everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed. And the
whole city and those in the country came out to meet Jesus, and to see
what had happened!
When they saw Him and found the man
who had the legion, out of whom the demons had left, sitting at the
feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind, they were afraid. [N]And
when those who had seen it told the people again about the swine and
how the demon-possessed man was healed, the whole crowd from the
country around Gadarenes began begging Jesus to leave their coasts; for
they were seized with great fear. So He got into the boat and returned
to the other side.
[O]Now when Jesus entered the boat,
the man out of whom the demons were cast begged to go with Him. But
Jesus would not permit it and sent him away, saying, [P]”Return home to
your friends, to your own house. Show and tell them about the great
things the Lord God has done for you, and how He has had compassion on
you.”
And he went his way, proclaiming
throughout the whole city and in Decapolis the great things Jesus had
done for him. And everyone was amazed.
A Dead Girl and a Sick Woman
Matthew 9:18-26, Mark 5:21-43, Luke 8:40-56
Your faith has healed
[A]When
Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great
multitude gathered and welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him.
While He was near the sea,
[B]speaking to them about these things, look, there came a man named
Jairus, one of the rulers of the synagogue. When he saw Jesus, he came
and fell at His feet, worshiping and begging Him to come to his house.
“My little daughter,” he said, “lies at the point of death, and may
even now be dead. But come and lay your hands on her that she may be
healed, and she will live.”
She was his only daughter, about twelve years of age. And she was dying.
[C]Jesus arose and followed him,
along with His disciples and many others. As He went the crowd reached
after Him. [D]Suddenly, a certain woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve
years came up behind Jesus and touched the hem of His garment. She had
suffered many things from many physicians, spending all her money on
them without getting any better. In fact, she grew worse and could not
be healed by any. [E]So when she heard about Jesus, she came up behind
Him in the crowd and touched the border of His garment. For she said to
herself, “If I can only touch His clothes, I will be well.”
And the fountain of her blood
immediately stopped. It dried up, and she felt in her body that she was
healed of her affliction.
[F]Jesus immediately knew within
Himself that power had gone out of Him, so He turned around in the
crowd and asked, “Who touched me? Who touched my clothes?”
When they all denied it, Peter and
the disciples said, “Master, you see the people crowding against you,
and you say: Who touched me?”
[G]“Somebody has touched me,” He said, “for I perceive that power has gone out of me.”
[H]He kept looking around to see
who had done this thing; and when He saw her, the woman saw that she
was not hidden from Him. So she, knowing what was done in her, was
afraid and came to Him, trembling. She fell down before Him, telling
Him all the truth and declaring to all the people the reason she had
touched Him, and how she was immediately healed.
Then He said to her, “Daughter,
take comfort; your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed
of your affliction.”
And the woman was healed from that hour.
[I]While He was still speaking,
someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler, saying,
“Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Master any further?”
[J]As soon as Jesus heard this, He
said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Don’t be afraid; only believe, and
she will be made well.”
[K]Jesus didn’t allow anyone to
follow Him, except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
[L]When He came to the house of the
synagogue ruler, He saw a commotion and those who wept and wailed
loudly. [M]Jesus entered the ruler’s house and saw the minstrels and
the people making a noise, and He said, “Let me through.”
He allowed no one to go in except
Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl. The
people were all weeping and wailing over her, but He said, “Why all
this commotion? Do not weep; for the girl is not dead, but is asleep.”
[N]And they laughed at Him with scorn, knowing that she was dead.
After He put them all out, He took
the father and mother, and those who were with Him, and went in where
the child was lying. He took her by the hand and called her, saying,
“Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you,
arise.”
[O]And her spirit returned. Then
she arose immediately and walked; for she was twelve years old. Her
parents were greatly astonished and amazed, but Jesus commanded them to
give her something to eat and not tell anyone what was done. [P]And the
news of this went abroad into all that land.
Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute
Matthew 9:27-34
Have mercy according to faith, trust and reliance.
Mute man; Jesus cured all kinds of diseases, every weakness and infirmity.
[27]When
Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and
saying, “Son of David, have mercy on us.”
[28]When He entered the house, the blind men came to Him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”
[29]Then He touched their eyes, saying, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.”
[30]And their eyes were opened.
Then Jesus sternly warned them,
saying, “See that no one knows it.” [31]But when they left, they spread
it abroad, causing His fame to be known in all that country.
[32]As they went out, look, they
brought to Him a mute man who was possessed with a demon. [33]When the
demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled,
saying, “Nothing like this has even been seen in Israel.”
[34]But the Pharisees said, “He cast out demons by the prince of the demons.”
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:30-44, Luke 9:10-17, John 6:1-13
Compassion - His love.
[A]Now
Jesus heard about the death of John about the same time the apostles
returned. They gathered around Him and told Him everything, both what
they had done and what they had taught. And He said to them, “Come by
yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many
coming and going and they had no leisure time, not even to eat.
So He took them, departing
privately by boat. They crossed the Sea of Galilee, called Tiberias,
and came to a deserted place which belonged to the city called
Bethsaida.
[B]The people saw them leaving, and
many recognized Him. So they followed Him and arrived first, running on
foot around the lake. Others heard of it, and they also followed,
running out of all the cities. A great multitude came to Him, and He
received them. They followed Him because they had seen His miracles
which He had performed on those who were diseased.
[C]Now Jesus had gone up into a
mountain and sat there with His disciples. When He came out and saw the
great multitude, He was moved with compassion toward them, because they
were like sheep not having a shepherd. And He began to teach them many
things about the kingdom of God, and He healed their sick, those who
had need of healing.
[D]The Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near.
[E]When Jesus looked up and saw the
great crowd which had come to Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we
buy bread, that these may eat?” [F]He said this to test him, for He
already knew what He would do.
[G]Philip answered Him, “Our two
hundred denarii is not sufficient to buy bread for them, even if
everyone takes only a little.”
[H]That evening, when the day was
about over, the twelve of His disciples came to Him and said, “We’re in
a deserted place and now the time is already very late. Send the
multitude away so they may find lodging and buy themselves some food in
the towns and surrounding countryside, for they have nothing to eat.”
[I]But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
[J]And they said to Him, “Shall we
go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give it to them to eat?”
[K]”How many loaves do you have?” He said to His disciples. “Go and see.”
When they found out, one of them,
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here who
has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so
many?”
“That’s right,” the others said.
“So unless we go and by more food for all this crowd, five loaves and
two fish is hardly enough.” For there were about five thousand men.
[L]“Bring them here to me,” Jesus said.
[M]Now there was plenty of grass in
that place, so He commanded them to tell everyone to sit down on the
green grass. “Make the men sit down in groups of fifty,” He said.
And they made them all sit down,
the men numbering about five thousand. And they sat down in ranks, by
hundreds, and by fifties.
[N]Jesus took the five loaves and
two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them. And when He had
given thanks, He broke the bread and gave it to His disciples to set
before them. They distributed it to the multitudes who were sitting
down; and He did the same with the fish, dividing them among them all,
as much as they wanted.
[O]And they all ate until they were
full. Then He said to His disciples, “Gather up the pieces so that
nothing will be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve
baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves and fish which
were left over by those who had eaten.
[P]And those who had eaten the
loaves were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Jesus Walks On the Water
Matthew 14:22-36, Mark 6:45-56, John 6:14-21
All who believed were healed. They believed if they could touch His garment, they would be healed.
[A]After
the men saw the miracle that Jesus did, they said, “This is truly the
Prophet who was to come into the world.”
[B]Now when Jesus perceived that
they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him a king, He at
once instructed His disciples to get into the boat and go ahead to the
other side to Bethsaida while He sent the people away. And when He had
sent the multitudes away, He again went up into a mountain by Himself
to pray.
[C]So that evening His disciples
went down to the sea, got into a boat and headed out over the sea
toward Capernaum, leaving Jesus alone on the land. It became dark and
the boat was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with the waves; for
the wind was contrary and the sea arose because of the great wind. And
Jesus had not come to them.
[D]Jesus saw them rowing hard,
against the wind. And about the fourth watch of the night, after they
had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia,[1] He came to them --
walking upon the sea. He was approaching the boat and would have passed
by them, but they saw Him and were terrified. “It is a spirit,” they
said. And they were afraid and cried out with fear, for they supposed
it had been a ghost.
[E]They all saw Him and were
frightened, but Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up. It
is I; don’t be afraid.”
[F]And Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.”
[G]“Come,” He said.
So Peter got out of the boat and
walked on the water, going to Jesus. [H]But when he looked at the
boisterous wind, he became afraid and began to sink. “Lord,” He cried
out, “save me.”
[I]Jesus immediately reached out His hand and caught him. “O you of little faith,” He said. “Why did you doubt?”
[J]Jesus and Peter got into the boat, and they willingly received Him. And the wind ceased.
They were greatly amazed beyond
measure, and wondered within themselves. They did not consider the
miracle of the loaves, for their heart was hardened. But they came and
worshiped Him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” And immediately
the boat was at the land where they were heading.
[K]When they had crossed over, they
came to the land of Gennesaret and moored to the shore. [L]When they
got out of the boat, the men of that place immediately recognized Him.
They sent word throughout all the surrounding country and ran through
that whole region. They brought to Him all who were diseased, carrying
the sick on their pallets to wherever they heard He was. [M]And
everywhere He went, into the villages, cities or countryside, they laid
the sick in the streets, begging Him that they might just touch the hem
of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made perfectly well.
Jesus Leaves Israel
Matthew 15:21-28, Mark 7:24-30
Demon-possessed daughter; minister to anyone, Mother had faith, she kept praying.
[A]Then
Jesus arose and left there and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. He
entered a house and did not want anyone to know of it, but He could not
be hidden. [B]For look, a woman of Canaan, whose young daughter had an
unclean spirit, heard of Him. She came and fell at His feet, crying
out, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David. My daughter is severely
tormented by a demon.”
The woman came from the coastal
area of Canaan. [C]She was a Greek, a Phoenician of Syria by
nationality, and she begged Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
[D]But He did not say a word to her. So His disciples came and urged
Him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out for us.”
[E]But He replied, “I am sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
[F]Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
[G]But Jesus said to her, “Let the
children be filled first. For it is not right to take the children’s
bread and throw it to the dogs.”
[H]“Yes, Lord. This is true,” she
replied. “Yet the dogs under the master’s table eat the children’s
crumbs which fall from it.”
[I]Then Jesus said to her, “O
woman, great is your faith. Your wish is granted you. And for your
reply, you may go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”
And her daughter was healed from
that very hour. [J]She went home and found her daughter free of the
demon and lying on the bed.
Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man
Matthew 15:29-31, Mark 7:31-37
Healed them all – mute, maimed, deaf, blind.
[A]Jesus
left the region of Tyre and Sidon and came again to the Sea of Galilee,
into the region of Decapolis. He went up into a mountain and sat down,
[B]and great multitudes came to Him, bringing with them those who were
lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others. They laid them down at
Jesus’ feet; and He healed them. [C]One of them was deaf and had a
speech impediment, and they begged Jesus to put His hand upon him.
[D]So Jesus took him aside from the
crowd, and put His fingers in his ears. Then He spit and touched his
tongue. [E]And looking up to heaven, He sighed and said to him,
“Ephphatha,” which means, “Be opened.” [F]Immediately his ears were
opened and the string of his tongue was untied, and he spoke plainly.
[G]Then He ordered them not to tell
anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more they proclaimed it.
[H]For the multitude was astonished beyond measure when they saw the
mute speaking, the maimed healed, the lame walking, and the blind
seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel, saying, “He has done all
things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
Mark 8:22-26
Blind Man in Bethesda – ministered to him twice.
[22]Then
He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him and begged
Jesus to touch him. [23]So He took the blind man by the hand and led
him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands
on him, Jesus asked him if he saw anything.
[24]And he looked up and said, “I see men as trees, walking about.”
[25]Then Jesus once again put His
hands on the man’s eyes and made him look up. And he was restored and
saw everyone clearly. [26]Then Jesus sent him away to his house,
saying, “Don’t go into town, nor tell anyone from the town.”
An Epilephic Boy Healed
Matthew 17:14-23, Mark 9:14-32, Luke 9:37-45
Jesus defines the cause, Because of your unbelief.
[A]And
it came to pass on the next day, when they had come down from the
mountain, many people met Him. When He came to His disciples, He saw a
great crowd around them and the scribes arguing with them. [B]As soon
as the crowd saw Him, they all were greatly amazed and ran to greet
Him. [C]And He asked the scribes, “What are you arguing with them
about?”
[D]Suddenly a man from the crowd came and knelt before Him, crying out,
“Master, I brought my son to you. I beg you, Lord, to look at him and
have mercy on him, for he is my only child. He is a lunatic and suffers
greatly, often falling into the fire or water. A dumb spirit seizes him
and throws him to the ground. He screams and foams at the mouth,
grinding his teeth. And he becomes stiff. It bruises him and hardly
ever leaves him alone. [E]I brought him to your disciples and asked
them to cast him out, but they could not cure him.”
[F]Then Jesus answered him, saying,
“O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I stay and put up
with you? Bring your son here to me.”
[G]So they brought him to Jesus. On
the way, as soon as he saw Jesus, the unclean spirit threw the boy down
and convulsed him. He wallowed on the ground, foaming at the mouth.
[H]Jesus asked his father, “How long has he been like this?”
“Since a child,” he said. [I]”It
has tried to kill him many times by throwing him into the fire and
water. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
[J]Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
[K]Then the child’s father
immediately cried out, and said with tears in his eyes, “Lord, I
believe; help my unbelief.”
[L]Jesus saw that a crowd was
rapidly gathering, so He rebuked the foul spirit, saying to him, “You
deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter
him again.”
Before he came out of him, the
demon cried out and threw the boy into a violent convulsion. He didn’t
move and looked like he was dead. “He’s dead,” the crowd said. But
Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up. He arose and was cured
from that very hour, for Jesus healed the child and gave him back to
his father. And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God.
[M]After Jesus went into the house,
His disciples came to Him in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we cast
him out?”
[N]“Because of your unbelief,”
Jesus told them. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of
mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to
there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
[O]This kind, however, does not come out except by prayer and fasting.”
[P]Then they left that place and
traveled through Galilee, but Jesus did not want anyone to know it.
Everyone wondered at all the things He did, and while He and His
disciples were staying in Galilee, He taught His disciples, saying,
“Let these words sink deep into your ears; for the Son of Man is going
to be betrayed and delivered into the hands of men. They will kill Him,
and after He is killed, He shall rise again the third day.”
They were filled with great sorrow,
[Q]but they didn’t understand what He meant and were afraid to ask Him.
This was hidden from them, so that they could not perceive it.
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
John 9:1-41
Blind man - Made clay, told him to wash.
And
as He passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. [2]His
disciples asked Him, “Master, who sinned, this man or his parents, that
he was born blind?”
[3]“Neither this man nor his
parents sinned,” Jesus answered, “but that the works of God might be
revealed in him. [4]I must do the work of Him who sent me while it is
day; for the night is coming, when no man can work. [5]As long as I am
in the world, I am the light of the world.”
[6]When He had said this, He spit
on the ground and made clay with the saliva. Then He anointed the eyes
of the blind man with the clay, [7]and said to him, “Go, wash in the
pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and
washed, and came back seeing.
[8]Now the neighbors and those who
knew he had been blind before this, said, “Is not this the man who sat
and begged?”
[9]“He’s the one,” some said. Others said, “No, he just looks like him.”
But he said, “I am the one.”
[10]At this, they said to him, “How
were your eyes opened?” [11]And he answered, “A man who is called Jesus
made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of
Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received my sight.”
[12]Then they asked him, “Where is He?”
“I don’t know,” the man replied.
[13]They brought the formerly blind
man to the Pharisees. [14](Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the
clay and opened his eyes.) [15]Then the Pharisees also asked him how he
had received his sight, and he told them, saying, “He put clay on my
eyes and I washed it off, and now I can see.”
[16]Hearing this, some of the
Pharisees said, “This man is not of God, because He does not keep the
Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such
miracles.” And there was a division among them.
[17]They said to the blind man
again, “What do you say about Him, since it is your eyes He opened?”
“He’s a prophet,” the man replied.
[18]But the Jews did not believe
him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called
the parents of him who had received his sight. [19]And they asked them,
saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he
now see?”
[20]“We know that this is our son,”
his parents answered, “and that he was born blind. [21]But by what
means he can now see, we don’t know. Nor do we know who opened his
eyes. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself.”
[22]His parents said this because
they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone
confessed that He was the Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.
[23]That is why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
[24]So they again called the man
who was blind, and said to him, “Give God the praise; we know that this
man is a sinner.”
[25]And the man said, “Whether He
is a sinner or not, I don’t know. But I do know one thing: I was blind
and now I see.”
[26]Then they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”
[27]“I have told you already,” he
answered, “and you did not listen. So why do you want to hear it again?
Do you also want to become His disciples?”
[28]Then they insulted him, and
said, “You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. [29]We know
that God spoke to Moses; as for this man, we don’t know where He’s
from.”
[30]The man answered, saying to
them, “Why, this is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is
from, and yet He has opened my eyes. [31]Now we know that God does not
listen to sinners. But if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His
will, He will hear him. [32]Since the world began no one has heard of
anyone opening the eyes of one who was born blind. [33]If this man were
not from God, He could do nothing.”
[34]Hearing this, they said to him,
“You were completely born in sins, and you are teaching us?” And they
threw him out.
[35]Jesus heard that they had
thrown him out, and when He found him, He said, “Do you believe in the
Son of God?”
[36]He answered, saying, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him.”
[37]And Jesus said to him, “You
have both seen and heard Him, for He is speaking with you now.”
[38]At this, the man said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshiped Him.
[39]Then Jesus said, “I have come
into this world to judge: that the blind will be made to see, and those
who see will be made blind.”
[40]Some Pharisees who were with Him heard this, and said to Him, “Are we blind also?”
[41]“If you were blind,” Jesus said
to them, “you would have no sin. But since you say, ‘We see,’ your sin
remains.”
Jesus Heals a Woman On the Sabbath
Luke 13:10-17
Woman with infirmity, He spoke and touched her. God glorified.
[10]Now
Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. [11]And
look, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen
years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. [12]When
Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are
free from your infirmity.” [13]And He laid His hands on her, and
immediately she was made straight, and began praising God.
[14]Now the ruler of the synagogue,
because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, spoke out with indignation,
saying to the people, “There are six days in which men ought to work.
So come and be healed on one of them -- not on the Sabbath.”
[15]Then the Lord answered him, and
said, “You hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath untie his
ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it out for water? [16]So ought
not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound these
eighteen long years, be untied from this bondage on the Sabbath day?”
[17]When He said these things, all
His adversaries were ashamed; and all the people rejoiced for all the
glorious things being done by Him.
Jesus Raises Lazarus Back to Life
John 11:1-44
Now
a certain man was sick. It was Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and
her sister Martha. [2](It was this Mary who anointed the Lord with the
fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus
was sick.) [3]So his sisters sent word to Jesus, saying, “Lord, the one
you love is sick!”
[4]When Jesus heard this, He said,
“This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the
Son of God might be glorified through it.”
[5]Now Jesus loved Martha and her
sister and Lazarus. [6]Yet when He heard that he was sick, He stayed
two more days in the place where He was. [7]Then after this He said to
His disciples, “Let’s go to Judea again.”
[8]“Master,” His disciples said,
“the Jews have just tried to stone you, and you are going there again?”
[9]Jesus answered, “Are there not
twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not
stumble, because he sees the light of this world. [10]But if one walks
in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him.”
[11]After He said these things, He
told them, “Our friend Lazarus is asleep; but I’m going that I may
awaken him out of his sleep.”
[12]Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he’s sleeping, he will get well.”
[13]Now Jesus spoke of his death,
but they thought that He was speaking about a restful sleep. [14]So
Jesus plainly told them, “Lazarus is dead. [15]And I am glad for your
sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless let
us go to him.”
[16]Then Thomas, who is called
Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die
with Him.”
[17]When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already been in the grave four days.
[18]Now Bethany was near Jerusalem,
about fifteen stadia[1] away, [19]and many of the Jews had come to
Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother. [20]Then
Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him;
but Mary stayed in the house, sitting by. [21]Then Martha said to
Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
[22]But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give it
to you.”
[23]“Your brother,” Jesus told her, “will rise again.”
[24]Martha replied, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
[25]Jesus said to her, “I am the
resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he were dead,
yet shall he live. [26]And whoever lives and believes in me shall never
die. Do you believe this?”
[27]“Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I
believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into
the world.”
[28]And when she had said this, she
went her way and secretly called her sister Mary, saying, “The Master
has come and is calling for you.”
[29]As soon as she heard this, she arose quickly and went to Him.
[30]Now Jesus had not yet come into
the town, but was still in the place where Martha met Him. [31]So when
the Jews, who were with Mary in the house trying to comfort her, saw
how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, saying, “She is
going to the grave to weep there.”
[32]Then, when Mary came where
Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if
you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
[33]So when Jesus saw her weeping,
and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He groaned in the spirit
and was troubled, [34]and said, “Where have you laid him?”
“Come and see, Lord,” they answered.
[35]Jesus wept.
[36]Seeing this, the Jews said, “See how He loved Him!”
[37]But some of them said, “Could
not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have also kept this man
from dying?”
[38]Then Jesus, again groaning in
Himself, came to the grave. It was a cave, with a stone laying against
it.
[39]“Take away the stone,” Jesus said.
But Martha, the sister of him who
was dead, said to Jesus, “Lord, by this time he will smell, for he has
been dead four days.”
[40]Jesus said to her, “Did I not
tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”
[41]Then they took away the stone
from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus looked up and said,
“Father, I thank you that you have heard me. [42]I know that you always
hear me, but I said this because of the people standing here, that they
may believe that you sent me.”
[43]When He had said this, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.”
[44]And he who was dead came out,
bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a
cloth.
“Untie him,” Jesus told them, “and let him go.”
Ten Lepers Healed
Luke 17:11-19
[11]And
it came to pass, as He was on the way to Jerusalem, He passed through
the midst of Samaria and Galilee. [12]As He entered a certain village,
He was met by ten men who were lepers; but they stood at a distance.
[13]So they called out with a loud voice, saying, “Jesus, Master, have
mercy on us.”
[14]When He saw them, He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”
And it came about, as they went,
they were cleansed. [15]And one of them, when he saw that he was
healed, returned, praising God in a loud voice. [16]He fell on his face
at the feet of Jesus, thanking Him. And he was a Samaritan.
[17]And Jesus said, “Were there not
ten cleansed? But where are the nine? [18]Did no one return to give
glory to God, except this foreigner?” [19]Then He said to him, “Arise,
and go your way; your faith has made you well.”
Jesus Teaches About Divorce
Matthew 19:1-12, Mark 10:1-12
Healed them all - no matter where HE was.
[A]And
it came to pass, when Jesus had finished saying these things, He arose
and left Galilee and went into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan.
Great multitudes followed and gathered around Him again, and, according
to His custom, He healed them there and taught them again.
[B]The Pharisees also came to Him,
testing Him, and asking Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his
wife for any reason?”
[C]“What did Moses command you?” He replied.
[D]“Moses,” they said, “permitted us to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”
[E]“For the hardness of your heart
he wrote you this precept,” Jesus told them. [F]“Have you not read that
He who made them at the beginning [G]of the creation of God ‘made them
male and female,’[1] [H]and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave
his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall be
one flesh.’[2] So then, they are no longer two, but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”
[I]At this, they said to Him, “Then
why did Moses say that a man can give his wife a certificate of divorce
and send her away?”
[J]“Because of the hardness of your
heart,” He told them again. “Moses permitted you to divorce you wives,
but it was not this way from the beginning.”
[K]When they were in the house, the
disciples asked Him again about this matter. [L]And He told them,
“Whoever divorces his wife, except for fornication, and marries another
commits adultery against her; and whoever marries her who is divorced
commits adultery. [M]And if a woman divorces her husband and marries
another, she commits adultery.”
[N]His disciples said to Him, “If
this is the case between a man and his wife, it is better not to
marry.”
[O]But He said to them, “Not
everyone can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been
given. [P]For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their
mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and
there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of
heaven’s sake. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.”
Two Blind Men Healed at Jericho
Matthew 20:29-34, Mark 10:46-52, Luke 18:35-43
Two Blind Men they asked for mercy, Jesus had pity.
[A]Now
it came to pass that they came to Jericho. He left Jericho with His
disciples, with a great number of people following Him. And look, as He
approached the other Jericho, two blind men were sitting by the
roadside begging. One of them was Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus.
Hearing the great multitude, they
asked what it all meant. And the crowd told them that Jesus of Nazareth
was passing by. When they heard this, they began crying out, saying, “O
Lord Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us.”
[B]Many in the crowd rebuked them,
telling them to be quiet. But they wouldn’t and cried out even more,
saying, “O Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us.”
[C]Jesus stopped and commanded that
they be brought to Him. So they called the blind men, saying, “Cheer up
and arise. He is calling you.”
Bartimaeus, throwing aside his
garment, rose up and came to Jesus, along with the other man. And Jesus
asked them, “What do you want me to do for you?”
“Lord, open our eyes,” they said, “so that we may see.”
[D]So Jesus had compassion on them
and touched their eyes. “Receive your sight and go your way,” He said.
“Your faith has saved you and made you well.”
They immediately received their
sight and followed Him along the road, glorifying God. And all the
people, when they saw it, praised God.
The Arrest of Jesus
Matthew 26:47-56, Mark 14:43-52, Luke 22:47-53, John 18:2-12
Jesus healed the ear of the soldier who arrested him. Forgiveness.
[A]Now
Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for he was one of the
twelve and Jesus often met there with His disciples. And while Jesus
was still speaking, lo, Judas came leading a great band of men and
officers which he had received from the chief priest, the scribes, the
Pharisees, and the elders of the people. They came with lanterns and
torches, and weapons of swords and clubs.
[B]The betrayer had arranged a
signal with them, saying, “The one I kiss, He’s the one; grab Him and
hold Him tight, and lead Him away safely.”
[C]So as soon as he arrived, he
headed straight for Jesus, saying, “Master, Master.” And when he was
near enough, he said, “Greetings, Master,” and kissed Him.
[D]But Jesus said to him, “Judas,
my friend, why have you come? Are you betraying the Son of Man with a
kiss?”
[E]So Jesus, knowing everything
that was going to happen to Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom
do you seek?”
[F]“Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered Him.
“I AM,” Jesus said.
Judas, who betrayed Him, had
stepped back and stood with them. [G]And as soon as Jesus had said to
them “I AM,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
[H]Then He asked them again, “Whom do you seek?”
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
[I]“I have told you that I AM,”
Jesus answered. “So if you are looking for me, let these go their way.”
[J]He said this so that the saying might be fulfilled: “I have not lost
any of those you gave me.”[1]
[K]When those around Him saw what
was going to happen, they said to Him. “Lord, shall we strike with the
sword?” But they came and laid their hands on Jesus and took Him.
[L]Suddenly, one of those who stood
with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword. Then he struck
the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. It was Simon
Peter who struck the servant, and the servant’s name was Malchus.
[M]“No more of this,”[2] Jesus said. And He touched his ear and healed him.
[N]Then Jesus said to Peter, “Put
your sword back into the sheath, for all who take the sword will perish
by the sword. The cup which my Father has given me, shall I not drink
it? [O]Do you think I cannot even now pray to my Father, and He will at
once give me more than twelve legions of angels? [P]But how then could
the Scriptures be fulfilled which say it must happen this way?”
[Q]In that same hour Jesus said to
the multitudes that came against Him, which included the chief priests,
the officers of the temple, and the elders, “Did you need to come out
with swords and clubs to take me, as though I were a thief? I sat with
you every day, teaching in the temple, and you never laid a hand on me.
But this is your hour, and the power of darkness. And all this has
taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.”
Then all the disciples deserted Him and fled.
[R]Then the band of troops and the
captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.
[S]And a certain young man followed Him, wearing nothing but a linen
cloth. The young men grabbed hold of him, [T]but he left the linen
cloth behind, fleeing from them naked.
